CES 2014 - THX team up with Benchmark to create new amplifier - article discussion

"A digital amp is like putting square wheels on a car, then adding suspension to take out the bumps."

But THX are happily taking Pioneer's money in exchange for THX Ultra2 Certification on their AVR's with digital amps onboard.

Surely if THX believed the technology was that bad they wouldn't certify Pioneer and wouldn't want their name/badge on the product.

Yes they would, because they'd get a few bob for it! And that's what makes the world go round!

Well THX have to work with what they've got so they set certain realistic benchmarks for manufacturers to hit based upon cinema standards. At the end of the day they operate in the real world and a lot of this comes down to cost. However it's good to see them developing technologies of their own because it will trickle down into other products.

THX aren't bashing Class D, in fact they said that some of the manufactures have been doing great things with digital amps. They were just trying to develop an analogue amplifier that had some of the convenience of its digital counterpart.

The D in class D doesn't stand for Digital..... So referring Class D as a digital amp is incorrect...

From Wikipedia about Class D amplifiers: "The term "class D" is sometimes misunderstood as meaning a "digital" amplifier. While some class D amps may indeed be controlled by digital circuits or include digital signal processing devices, the power stage deals with voltage and current as a function of non-quantized time.
