Post Your HD DVD Predictions Here

I believe one or more of the following could be on the cards...

    1) A sub £199 budget player
    2) Hardware\software price reductions
    3) Further studio\distributor support
    4) Further manufacturer support
    5) Figures on take-up & sales in 2006

Please can we keep this on topic and not turn it into another HD DVD vs Blu-ray thread.

    That would be nice...

The whole MS & Peter Jackson tie-in should certainly help :)

I think all the above are dead certs!
    Also according to avsforum,
LG due to demo first dual format player for the US in q2 2007
Warner Bros to unveil dual format disk that plays on BD & HD dvd.
By the way LOTR HD DVD is already listed as coming soon on amazon.com.

What would I like see announced at CES for HD DVD?

New Titles. By far and away the most important element for me. I would like to see upwards of 50 titles announced for Q1/Q2 2007. I would like to see New Line announce their plans and initial launch titles. I don't expect any shift in BD studio support yet though - especially as dual format players look like the way ahead.

High end HD DVD Producer. I would like to see a 'high end' company such as Denon, Marantz, NAD, Onkyo, Yamaha, Arcam or Meridian announce a HD DVD player. Perhaps a little too early in the war - I should imagine most will go dual eventually - but we know HD DVD has a healthy future in the mass market models - it would be good to see adoption in high end ranges.

More Dual Format Rumours. I don't expect any other dual announcements yet - I think LG has caught everyone by surprise - but some dual format rumours from other BD supporters would be nice to hear: Samsung, Pioneer or Liteon perhaps?

...other than these I'm not sure CES has too many surprises for HD DVD. We've had a major defection from the BluRay side and I think expecting anything else at present would be wishing for golden elephants. :)

Accroding to the register Warner has flat out said they will show their dual format discs.

For me, more films is the most important thing to see.

From what's being said on other sites, LG plan to launch their dual format player in the US in January with a RRP of $1199

I suspect we'll see a couple of the big BR studios announce that they are going to start releasing both formats. Fox would be a good bet, because murdoch isn't stupid and he always want's to make as much money as possible.

Other than that, I also think we'll hear about a Samsung dual format player.

I'd personally like to hear an announcement of cheap-ish internal ATAPI versions of both BR, and HD-DVD readers (not interested in burners) for PC's, making the creation of dual format mediapc's significantly cheaper/simpler. I doubt we will though.

With LG announcing a dual format player, I'm sure other companies will respond with similar devices soon.

But LG's announcement only came a few days ago - far too soon for anyone else to have a player ready, or to change their pricing structure in time for CES.

Speaking as a usual early adopter who this time is sitting back and waiting for things to pan out a bit, I think a £200-ish player will make it too tempting not to buy.

As always the concern is not the player (I haven't got money to throw away, but if I had to buy a different player in 12-18 months I wouldn't be too upset about £200), but the media. I would be annoyed to have a load of discs I couldn't play. That's why even some early adopters are hanging back.

So my prediction (along with others above) is that LG's announcement of a dual format player is just the tip of the iceberg (I hope). This will solve the media problem once and for all.

Indeed - hopefully we'll get a few reliable "rumours" of dual products coming - but I would have thought LG has caught most out here...

    1) This is where HD-DVD can hurt Blurry the most, but it must be sooner rather than later.

    2)Linked to 1)

    3)This has to come

4)Linked to all of the above

5)Whose going to admit to Bluury selling more.

A public announcement that Blurry is the cause of the lack of takeup in HD in general.Call for all manufacturers and studio's to support ,what is clearly felt by the vast majority of AV enthusiasts, the superior format HD-DVD.The official and natural successor to DVD.This fiasco has gone on long enough.

I doubt they will do it.But it would raise the heat and indicate that a responsible part of the industry is calling for this to be settled.
Only the industry can settle this. But it must be settled now!

Lite-On presented a BLU-RAY player at last years CES, and a HD-DVD player (prototype) at the IFA in september.

So i guess, they could very well be the next to present a combi BD/HD player. ;)

My hope is that we´ll see a lot of new HD films presented at CES, and maybe a high-end HD-DVD player from D&M Holdings (Denon, Marantz) or Onkyo. :D
