How about placing it behind the screen?

It's difficult to say exactly how much detorioation to the center sound would occur. I have mounted a center speaker behind the set up in my study (for my Xbox) and have not really noticed any degradation, although this is a world apart from watching DVD's in 20 ft living room.

I would say at least give it a go. If it's acceptable then all well and good; if not then you will obviously need to explore other avenues.
