Centre speaker in a cabinet?

Is there any problem, acoustically speaking, with placing a centre speaker inside a shelved unit with solid sides?
How would you know if it was wrong?
How much space does a speaker need around it?
Is it hit & miss as to whether there would be any resonance?
Does it make any difference having a back to the unit, compared with it being open?
I can appreciate there may be theoretical problems with the acoustics if a centre speaker is within a solid cabinet, but has anyone out there had any real world problems?
Any thought appreciated!
