Ive just got a Viera 42" screen on the freebie stand. The problem I have is that I dont have enough room in the cabinet stand for a centre speaker and Id rather not fix one to the wall above the screen. Is it a bad idea to put the centre speak directly behind the plasma screen?

    Simply put - yes.

The sound will become muffled and as you will predominately be hearing reflections of the sound from the centre any panning special effects will be reduced as you lose the point of origin for the centre.

To get the best sound from the system you will need to ensure that the centre isnt behind the plasma screen - wall mount the plasma or centre or invest in a new cabinet.
