Think I'm losing direction.... Advice please!

Well happy with my Sony VA555ES, but that's started me on the upgrade thing again.

My Panny DVD RA82 plays DVD-A via phono 5.1 connections, and
    CD via the coax........

My VA555ES wants a SACD CD player plugged into it......

My ageing Technics SL-P770 CD player wants to be connected to the amp with its never before used coax or optical outputs......

Do I really need a HDCD CD player......

DVD-A from the Panasonic RA82 is VERY impressive, but how does it compare with a good quality SACD or HDCD CD player?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Hi John,

I run a Pioneer 656A and have a few DVD-As and a few SACDs which I run via the analogue outputs into the 555.

To be totally honest, I can't tell the quality apart.

I also use the 656A to play bogo CDs and it sounds great also.

I would say if you like DVD-A multi-channel sound you will like SACD. And 2 channel SACD does sound much better than CD.

However, I certainly wouldn't buy a dedicated SACD/CD/HDCD player at the moment (unless it was fairly cheap) as I'm still not sure where the DVD-A vs SACD war is going to pan out.

Maybe consider a universal player (including DVD-Video) as there are a few more available in the past few months in various price/quality brackets. There may also be audio only versions, but I haven't really looked.

Did that help ? I bet not a lot :D

    Cheers

    Ian

    Hi Ian,

    Thanks for your views.

Looks like I'll just dust off the old Technics CD player's coax output, and treat her to a nice new lead to the Sony;)

To be truthful, so far I still prefer the normal stereo CD format for music. I've got a couple of DVD-A discs, but while very impressive for quality, they somehow seem..... sort of false sounding.
A bit like the BBC news in Pro Logic....wrong sounding if you know what I mean?

Going to see Midge Ure live in M Keynes tomorrrow. I'll be checking the sound system very carefully. And taking note if he decides to sing some songs from Rear left/right, centre rear left/right etc:D

    Cheers,

    John
