Hooked it up today. My first DVD recorder. Took 3 stabs at recording directly to Philips DVD-R 1x-8x. The recording proceeded without a hitch, but when I try to play or finalize, I get a message saying that the disk is damaged or defective. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you sure it was a DVD-R and not a DVD+R? The Toshiba RDXS32 reads and writes to the official DVD formats: DVD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RAM. The other two DVD recordable formats (DVD+RW and DVD+R) are unofficial formats spearheaded by Philips and will not record on incompatible machines.

Yes - I'm fairly certain Philips don't have branded DVD-R media. Especially not 8x DVD-R media. As with any format war it is the consumer who suffers as they end up buying the wrong media!

Well, I got two 10-packs of Philips DVD-R media. They are labeled as 4.7GB, 120 min, 1-8x. Bought them at a Circuit City store. Thanks to all for the replies. Do you think this might be is a counterfeit product or something?
