As some will know i got an nu-vista 3d cdplayer the other day and a thought crossed my mind. Do valves have a life expectancy and is it likely that using the above cd player moderatley on a daily basis will require them to be replaced at all?

    Thanks to those that help.

    How's it going?

    100,00 hours - should last a while 25-30 years? :) :)

    About £10ish each iirc

HI gus:) Things are cool. CD player is great (was the better choice imo).
Just trying to find some speaker cables now to get the rig sounding super sweet:)

25-30 years sounds good to me:) Maybe by then we might have involved to a stage where we dont use valves anymore:)

    Doubt it ;)

Succumbed to temptation yesterday and went for the 308 stuff, should be here tomorrow --- spend it now you can't take it with you!!

Cables wise there is a lot available sale or return, Kimber 8TC and Isolda spring to mind.

Nordost and Van den Hul may be ok as well.

I'm using Chord Odyysey 4 but it may be a bit "toppy" (if that's a word) and once the 308's are run in I will be trying out a few new ones.

Think you can buy Kef Ref cable, same as they use inside?

For IC's what are you using? Thinking of some Nu-Vista's with bullets on to replace my Chord and DNM ones.

Problem is ... in 25-30 you're unlikely to be able to get any Nu Vista valves ... Musical Fidelity bought the whole lot of them IIRC and used **most** of them to buy the CD players and amps.

MF company policy is to keep a replacement set on hand for every unit sold.

Just had a quick look at the info MF provide with their stuff.

To paraphrase - you should get 100,000 hours out of a nuvista but most damage is at switch on, so if left powered up, 200,000 hours is achievable. They also state a failure rate of 0.01%.

If you are worried they will sell a spare set of nuvista tubes to you just in case.

Am in danger of becoming the house MF anorak!

I cant remeber the name of the IC im using. Its not a brilliant one though and is only a temporary messure. I havent even started auditioning for those yet. I will after i get the speaker cable out of the way cause it the bit im finding the most annoying:)
Im gonna try and get some nordost cables today for demo. They where what i originally demoed the 203's with and from what i can remeber where quite nice:)

The kef reference cable sounds like a good idea any knowldge on it you could share?

    oooops

Kef high Definition reference speaker cable.
I have 100 metre's for sale, surplus to requirements, was being used for custom install.
This stuff is also used inside Kef speakers to wire them.
It is high quality reference speaker cable.
Blue in colour and rounded in shape. Not biwire but could be used to do such a thing if you double up.

£4.5 per metre, cheaper the more you buy.

    Cheers

    AL

Valve life is a funny one depending on many things. First of all materials used in the construction of the valves, more importantly quality of them. Chineese ECC83 reached 1000hrs a few years ago but Telfunken and Mullards easily did 100,000 hrs!

Next up is the valve type. Your Nuvistas are good here

Then there is how hard you can the valve in the circuit you are using.

Re the Nuvista, this time is irrelevant! Don't worry, these are reliable babies (more so than SS in the CD player) and many other things will fail in your CD player before these babies!! They are probably something like RCA 6CW4s or a variant. If MF don't have any give me a call, I have loads :) Despite wht they might tell you about buying the worlds supply, they didn't, they just bought what one supplier had! Decent valve.

Nothing to worry about here, let me know if you want any more info on the valve, I can easily copy the data sheet for you.

Can you post some comparason between valve and solid state please cause im still finding it amazing that we are using such primative technology. Infact anything will do cause my knowledge of valves and the benifits of them is currentley nil:)
