I think i'm right in saying that the bigger the ccd, the better right?

what i'd like to know is what does 1/1.8 inch or 1/2.5 inch mean?

    does that mean it's 1 x 1.8 inches square? i.e. 1/2.5 is bigger (therefore better) than 1/1.8??

    cheers,

    Ste

There's been issues about cramming mps on small ccd's leading to noise. Say you stick 7mp on a 1/1.8 you may well get better image with a 1/1.8 5mp censor more room means bigger pixels means less chance of noise

You link is not working at present.

I was reading a few months back and they said they had not advanced with the sensors as much as the mp size and really getting an 8mp camera was a bit waste of time and round 5 mp gave as good a results.

You must remember that the ccd is the equivalent of the 'film' ie what captures the image. If you think back to old pre digital days there wasn't a helluva lot between one branded film and another, but the quality of your lens could make a really big difference, well now the difference is that not only can the quality of your lens make a difference but you can't pick and choose the quality of your 'film' (ccd).
But don't dispair if you buy a camera with a quality lens then you will also have a good quality ccd (for the money).
