This may seem like a really stupid question but are there convertors or any other way of sending audio and video down cat 5 cables.

    Ie

a cat5 to digi coax or optical converter and vice versa

    and

cat5 to video (such as DVI or possibly component / RGB) and vice versa

Thanks for that. Both the Kat5 and iphomenet look very interesting but from what I can understand they are analog only ie s-video and stereo rather than DVI and 6 channel audio. Still have e mailed Keith at KAT5 to enquire

Iphomenet uses the 4 pairs in cat5 to convey Composite video, Stero audio and IR control using electronic components. This obviously provides a cheaper solution for general distribution and control of AV & CCTV around the home. Dedicated standalone component, RGB 5.1 - 6 audio equipment etc. can be used in specified areas using ip as a additional source.

    hi Ridcully

Keith is (was?) able to do custom units, including RGB.

Of course you could always go for the super high tech approach of streaming your video as data to your client devices which then output in whatever format is appropriate (DVI, RGB etc)

    cheers
