I need to get some small speakers for a hifi in the bedroom and was thinking about the Castle Compact speakers. Whenever people mention these they are always partnered with a subwoofer (which I don't want to do), so will they be OK for stereo use ?

The specs say 80hz is the lowest they go. You'll be missing a big part of the midrange when listening to music. :(

Perhaps some Mission M30i's or Epos ELS3's? Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's are a bit bigger, but very good too.

With sub in my Dad's system they are brilliant but I would say strictly background music only without a sub.

The Epos ELS3s would also be subject to the same sort of problem although they're also very good speakers. I don't think it would really be a problem though in a second room situation, I used to use my Mission 771e's on their own and they're pretty small. :)

I don't think the ELS3 has any more of a bass roll off than a 771e John. The ELS3 is designed as a standmount and was later incorporated into a sub sat system whilst the Castle compact is really just a conventional looking satellite.

I've just got the Epos ELS3 speakers and they sound great on first listening to them  To be honest they are probably a little too good for my bedroom system !

I'm beginning to think I should change my Castle Avon front speakers on the AV system in the lounge. I've got compact surrounds, keep2 centre and a BK subwoofer driven by a Denon 3805. I've found the Avons to be quite harsh for my ears from day 1 to be honest (even in stereo mode on my old setup) and I'm thinking that other speakers may be more musical.
