Yet more disappointment in my dealings with Sytner Mini (Oldbury)

We part ex'd the wife's BMW towards an 18 month old Mini and signed all the docs etc on the 22nd May.

On the day of agreeing the deal we had to leave a £250 deposit to secure the vehicle - I did challenge this at the time as we had already agreed all the finance/part ex values etc and was due to collect the car 4 days later but they insisted it was company policy and so we left £250 on a debit card which would be refunded after collecting the vehicle.

We collected the car on the 26th and found several problems with the car within 48 hours of picking it, although these were finally resolved on Wednesday (10th)!! I've asked the salesman several times about the return of the deposit although he claims its with the finance department. He promised to CC us in to an e-mail he sends to the finance dept to authorise the refund which hasn't happened and for some reason seems to prefer to speak via e-mail than phone.

I've just dropped him another e-mail regarding the deposit after speaking to him in person on Wednesday and him promising to chase this matter up but surprise surprise I've heard nothing!! Its now 21 days since we paid the deposit and 17 days since we picked up the car and we still don't have the deposit!

Am I being unreasonable time wise or is it a pretty straight forward refund of my money that should be done in a day or two??

I'll pop down Monday but want a little advice before going down as I've tried to be patient so far!

    Thanks for any advice.

I don't see why it's taken this long, it's a 2 minute process to refund using a machine, but also think it's odd you've to get this money back and it wasn't just taken into account on the deal and used as a downpayment on the finance to slightly reduce the monthly cost.

Anytime I've given a car dealer a deposit, it's just I owe whatever we agreed to minus the deposit I paid them.

Contact your card issuer explain the situation' send copies of any documents and ask for a 'chargeback'.

Totally agree, the £250 deposit should just have been deducted from any remaining figure on the deal.
So no need for a refund.
    Weird.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

I know we sorted all the finances out with the part exchange etc and then they said they'd need £250 to remove the car from sale which as I say I challenged at the time. It wasn't ever offered as an option to reduce the monthly costs and simply a holding deposit so they could take the car off the forecourt.

They only gave it a quick valet before handing it over so they didn't have to do much with it.

In hindsight I'd of rather handed them £250 cash to hold on to until we collected the car and then just hand us it back up on collection. I'm not sure why they can't just put it back on the card like a shop would if we returned an item. Nothing seems straight forward with them!!

I've never been asked for a deposit on a used car and have paid it only when ordering new. But that always came off the final invoice for the vehicle.

They've got the benefit of your money. Tell them to sort it immediately or you'll bill them for loss of interest.

Probably will be seen as an abuse of position [emoji1]
But when dealing with aholes like this dealer response will be "taken into consideration" [emoji1]
OP just call in after work and ask about your refund as @true romancesuggests [emoji4]

I had exactly the same as this when I bought a new car from Kia. £500 deposit on the day the deal was done on a debit card in order for them to order the vehicle etc. It did strike me as odd but never having bought a new car before I just assumed it was the done thing.

No issues with my refund though, on the day I picked up the car the salesman refunded the £500 via a card machine.

I've bought three used cars in the past year, every dealer asked me for a deposit.
Which was then deducted from the final bill, of course.
I would see this as normal practice, used or new.
The only time a deposit isn't required are when:

A/ You're buying it there and then
B/ You're accepting the car is still up for sale until you come back with the full amount and you may lose it.

Not many dealers will take a car off sale and secure it just for you on trust alone, that would be a bit mental.o_O

Again i just got another vehicle. Paid £100 holding deposit, finance company paid the full amount of £13000 which.
the salesman then refunded the £100 back into the card when I was there collecting the car

I tried one more time to resolve this with no joy so took @True Romance advice and went down in one of our riot vans and parked it right in front of the showroom.

Funnily enough we got the deposit back 2 days later as the salesman kept forgetting even though he said it had been sorted!!

Sounds strange from someone as reputable as sytner but it's pretty simple, the sales exec would've given you an order form surely? This would've stated 'balance due -£250'?? It's the sales execs job to go through the order form with the customer when the deal is finalised and for the customer to sign to say they are happy? something didn't happen somewhere along the line but glad you got your deposit back.

also cash deposits are refunded as either a cheque or bank transfer never as cash :smashin:
