Insurance cost rise and car-crash camera might help protect premium. . . but there seem to be two price ranges - those under £50 which are low-resolution, like VGA and those that claim HD which turn out to be somewhat less, yet cost £250.... all record to micro SD cards.

+Most have IR LEDs for night-time vision, although I'd expect the light-spill against the windscreen would be many times brighter than the subject which could be 30 feet away - just how bright can these LEDs be? Units are powered from the car 12v, so no issues with battery-life.

Question - has anyone fitted one of these - Was it any good day/night and how are they best fitted?

eg. one specialist warns against the suction (to windscreen) as this is against the UK Law - er, why?

Anyone?

harry..................they are huge in russia, lots of crashes in russia apparently

however another unexpected but extremely interesting aspect was , most of the decent footage of the recent meteor which struck russia was captured by these in car cams , indeed most of the scientific calculations and data also came from the footage from these cams

just in case you are interested :)

and apologies for side-tracking your thread

stormchaser, interesting as I'd wondered why these folks had been recording.

John, On the subject of other threads - I did a Search, but it is restricted to this Forum, so that's why I missed it . . . . . will have a look . . . .Thanks.

EDIT: It appears to have been hijacked by reporting errant drivers, etc.

I've been using 2 of these windscreen cams for some years now , one in each car . 2 identical models bought from Dx*reme .They dont have LED's , pointless having if using through glass .They have built in folding screens for playback and take SD cards . They arn't HD models but still give a good picture . If plugged into the cigarette lighter , they automatically start recording when you start the engine and switch off when you turn the key .I find them a must when driving nowadays , if only to prove who's fault it was if involved in an accident . CCTV , camcorders ,phone cameras are everywhere nowadys recording every aspect of live ,so why not have one in your car . I've seen some horendous happenings on the roads in my time so why not record it , it may be helpfull to someone .
These cameras are inexpensive and may save your NCB at some point .

rickyt - can you be specific as to this satisfactory model? The DX website is not very informative (ie Less is more).
Non-HD is OK, but I'd like the camera to be compatible wit UK-PAL and 50Hz - can you say?

Are you using two to cover the rear also? Don't understand why two?
EDIT:- Sorry, re-read ...quite clear why two, other Q remains...

This picture below is the type I bought . There seems to be alot of similar cameras on the site ,some with HDMI output , mine has the 3.5mm socket [composite]. Yes, I bought 2 , as they were only about £29 each , I thought it would be a good idea to keep one in each of my motors . They record to SD card ,which I simply slide into the laptop to view using VLC player .With regard to 2 cameras , you can buy a similar SD camera from the same site that will record front view as well as rear view at the same time . Infact there is alot of clever gadgets on that site .
