hi... got a letter from the AA as it's time for my renewal - and I'm a gold member which means it'll cost 77.75 for roadside...

what's the options out there - anything better and/or cheaper out there?

Ring them up and get it cheaper, Roadside is £29.99 for new customers. I've always rung them up and got it cheaper.
Although this year I got fed up of them quoting ridiculous renewal prices and switched to green flag.

and the price has increased from 69.90 from last year - and I haven't even used them... Hmmm... at the very least they'll be getting a pohone call...

I alternate between AA & RAC each year via Topcashback.

Also look at a premium current account from your bank. They generally offer things like breakdown cover, mobile phone & travel insurance as part of the monthly fee.

mine has just come in as well
£69.00 Age Uk. My car Insurance came in too not worth changing for £2 but using a comparison site there was nearly £1,000 between cheapest and most expensive.

As people already said. I find the best way to alternate between RAC and AA each year. I have joint cover with my Dad and just renewed a couple of weeks ago. £170 for two people with Home Start, recovery, roadside and onward travel (courtesy car etc). Then £85 cashback on top.

Join when you need them, might cost more on the spot but cheaper in the long run

We use green flag as they seemed to have the best deal for European cover.

I'm sure Green Flag are advertising 50% of your current breakdown renewal price in the newspapers.

I did pretty much the same deal 2 years ago with AA, then at renewal time they quoted £330 :laugh: I went with a Green Flag, £90 for near identical cover, and when the renewal came up this year it actually went down slightly.

Had similar recently for my FIL with the RAC, roadside. A daft price for the renewal so I rang them up and told them not to renew and then went to their website and got it for £27.99. It's still that price now.

I tried to do that once. I could join at the standard rate and 24 hours before I could get recovered or I could pay an extra £99 for immediate use.

We had basic 'bank' one. For any real assistance we had to upgrade at £130 or something silly.
So sat in the services, googled prices and it was cheaper, but couldn't use it for 24 hours.

I was just going by Nationwide's offering, which seems fairly comprehensive.

We get Green Flag as an Add on for our car insurance, covers both of us for full cover for less than a hundred (not sure exactly what without checking).

Cost me over £100 to join the AA on the spot. I did get it refunded though after writing a letter of complaint for having to wait 4hours on the side of the motorway with a 5year old child on board in the pitch dark.

It's annoying that you have to chase up to get the best price (proper price?). Had my renewal and it's £290. That's for family personal cover (3), recovery and homestart. Online, it's £215 RAC and £225 AA. A quick phone call and it's now £200!

well, it's defo worth calling them - just came off the phone a few minutes ago.. .said i wanted to cancel and got through to the cancellations dept (lady said i needed a reason before she put me through...haha...get the other guy prepped..!)

and bottom line is that it's down from 77.75 to 29.99..!

    can you belive that..?

basically - I had another car some years ago - and the policy was on that car, I got another banger and had an issue with that - called them up and got it change so that I was covered and not the car... so, I'm back down to having this car covered instead of any...

I always phone and sometimes flip between the AA and RAC depending on what deals or cash back offers are around. They show no loyalty on their part so balls if I'm showing any back.

Usually do the same as Desmo, though currently have breakdown cover (RAC, incl home start etc) included with my car insurance
    - both start dates are the same so Aviva via TopCashback had the best overall deal for insurance + breakdown after cashback; will no doubt be a different story when it comes to renewal

I have RAC for the bike.
No homestart, don't need that, but do have onward journey.
Renewal was going to be £88 something.
Got them to price match Green Flag at £57.
I wouldn't actually switch to Green Flag as I don't like the idea of them using a chain of independents, rather than their own guys/equipment.

It was quite funny them trying to sell me homestart though.
Letting them go on and on.

Ford give you free breakdown cover with their servicing. Even with their value £99 service I think.

    Got to be best value?
