Can't use my new 3TB disk

I bought a Hitachi Deskstar 3TB disk last week. It's for back up only. I have a sort of "quick release" SATA hatch in my pc that I slot HDDs into and this is what I'm using.

However, in disk manager, it shows as 2 partitions, one of 2048 and one of 746. I cannot "combine" the two of them into one simple volume.

Anyone any ideas how to go about this? Thanks.

Can you the disk as unpartitioned space, with no file system, then format to NTFS (or whatever file system you use)

XP suppports partitions up to 2TB, Vista/7 support GPT partions which are a lot larger - I can't remember but that it will last me this century.
