Hi Folks,

Quick question, trying to backup my ps3's data and plugged in my external hard disk to ps3. Its not being recognised though. Its an IDE disk in an external caddy, no problems being detected on pc..

Should it work with ps3?

Cheers,
Mick

Hi Mick,

The disk needs to be FAT32 formated otherwise PS3 will not understand the file system.

pretty sure it is fat32. i've seen some references that only SATA drives work with the ps3?

i also have a sony 4gb flash mp3 player, i might delete the music from it and see will the ps3 detect it, will 4gb be enough for backup i wonder?

cheers,
mick

SATA only refers to internal drives. Any external USB drive should work as long as it is FAT32 formatted.

ok, will try again when i get home from work

p.s. when you plug in the drive, should a message appear in the XMB or a new icon?

I haven't connected an external drive yet but I suspect it would be an icon somewhere on the XMB. Hopefully someone else can confirm this.

A new icon appears in the music and video etc parts of the XMB.

As has already been said, the drive has to be fat32 for it to work. Sorry but 4gb is not enough, I backed my PS3 up today and it was over 5gb in size

Depending on the size of the disc and the OS you are using you may have to repartion it to format it as Fat32

its 4gb per file, not 4gb in total lol

i have no problems with a fat32 formatted 500gb drive in an externally powered caddy:)

Does it just say no files found or does the drive not even show up?

I use a 30gb 1.8" drive from a knackered iPod, reformatted to fat 32. it's USB powered and works brilliantly.

I use an external Western Digital 120GB HDD. I formatted it with Partition magic and have no worries accessing it from the XMB or Linux :)

I have a 40 gig 2.5" IDE drive (old drive taken from my laptop) in one of these and it works really well on PC and PS3.

The solution to my problem has been under my nose all the time, the old 30gb disk that I took out of my laptop.

Looks like it matches the PS3 too.

Thanks for that :smashin:

I use a LG XD 500GB USB Powered drive FAT32 formatted and that works fine.
Only thing is - cant see that this has been mentioed - when the PS3 finds the drive, you have to click on the triangle and select Display All. You can then view your Movies, Photo's, Music ect......

Hahhaah, im new to all this. Was going to build a media centre, but then found out that i could use my PS3.

What do you have to names the folders so you dont have to use triangle to display all?:D

Google can answer that: Folder structure • PS3 Explained

I personally find it better to just use the triangle method. Means I can access anything on my HDD whilst keeping a structure I like.

I also upgraded my internal HDD and copy everything to the PS3. YOu can set up your own folder on the console and even have album art and 15 second video thumbnails for your movie files
