Can't install new samsung 1tb f1 hard drive

Hi. I've been googling and messing all day with my pc. I have a dell xps430 with a 640gb hard drive. It is set to raid on in the bios, and I have previously had a 250gb second hard drive installed with no problems.
I got a samsung 1tb spinpoint hard drive, but when I put it in the system fails to boot - it just hangs on the screen that's black with (c) microsoft and the scrolling thing at the bottom. I've tried putting it in a different older dell and it all boots up ok in there (though I can't access the drive from my computer there).
It's got me totally stuck.
It does come up first with a message saying SMART failed, and mentions the samsung drive on one of the first black screens.
Can anyone offer any advice at all? Thanks.

you need to take it off raid in the bios unless your trying to raid drives together
