Ever since I upgraded to version 9 I have not been able to copy a CD on to hard drive at all. Outcast, Moby, Nas - none of them will copy!

All I get is a message reading:

"Windows Media Player encounterrred an unknown error"

It worked fine before when I had version 8 or whatever it was.

Has any one else had this problem when copying their music, or is this Microsoft trying to put a spanner in the works associating with a copyrighting issue?

    P.S - The CD's still play fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Uninstall, then reinstall. Make sure you're using the final release and not the earlier betas or release candidates. Make sure all service packs and windows updates are also installed.

I merely suggest based on past experience. The installation of service packs and updates might help cure your problem too though (I searched through your past posts) ;)

You could also try the Microsoft Knowledgebase

    http://support.microsoft.com/

I would specifically choose "Windows Media Player" from the search topics.....

    Now moving ....

I believe that the latest versio of WMP is now very strict in copying/licensing/use of pirate software etc.

For instance, I have software that it wouldn't play because it won't get the required codecs. Reverted back to ver 8 and all is fine.

I can only equate it to the copyright problems appearing on cds.

My explanation is a generalisation, but I hope you get the idea.

I just read this sort of thing in computer mags. If I'm totally wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me.

    Thanks everyone for your help!

My PC is P4 2Ghz, 256 DDR RAM, 80Gb Hard Drive, & runs Windows XP with Broadband also.

Earlier today I downloaded all the latest Windows updates available but I still had the same problem. I then searched all of the Microsoft help pages and looked for help on the web but still could not find an answer.

I was just about to do a system restore in order to revert back to version 8 when I thought I'd try to copy from CDs with a different format.

I tried the copying at 'Windows Media Audio (variable bit rate)' instead and this seems to work fine. It also works 'WMA Lossless'. For some strange reason it will not copy at normal WMA though

The difference to me now is that I use up more space when copying a CD. It all seems a bit daft to me though

Once again thanks a lot for the help. It is much appreciated!

Appears I spoke too soon

Copying at a variable bitrate actually lets you copy the music to the hard drive but doesn't let you play it :suicide:

Looks like I'll do a system restore in order revert back to version 8 in the morning then - God I hate Microsoft

Did you turn off the license management?

I've had no problems at all with WMP9 copying to WMA format. It's worth checking the licence management as Squirrel suggested as I have that switched off.

Is this the 'copy protect music' check-box under the 'Copy Music' tab?

If so then it is definitely off.

Yeah that's the one. Sounds like WMP9 really doesn't like your PC :(

Yep sure seems to dislike it. I will reinstall it again though after doing a system restore, before I revert back to version 8, and see if this sorts it out. If not then back to V8 it goes :( - I really liked version 9!
