Canon Pixma ip2600 broken -any better options?

Bought a new one of above but it doesn't work. Been offered money back or replacement.

It is used for

letters/text 40%

school homework -colour, with images/photos etc -not high quality 40%

photos 20%

Is it worth paying anymore?
the multicolour cartridges look expensive -worth going for?

Don't need/want any fancy functions!

Should I go for another ip2600, or maybe up the range one, or another manufacturer?
