I think so, but will depend on operation and AF speed. Canon UK will overprice it compared to US market. Its like an RX100 thats a decent size, faster lens and with a bigger sensor.

can't see it toppling the RX's TBH - especially with that resolution and dropping the viewfinder....

Id rather have clean images than loads of resolution. RX100 has no viewfinder either. Different target audience, theyll probably release a clip on EVF.

I'd rather have both - or all 3 if you include the viewfinder ;)

...but I meant that dropping the VF on the Canon was "losing a USP" that might well be swaying people towards the GX in the first place :)

Yeah, perhaps, but as far as I understand the OVF was a POS anyway so no real loss if they offer a decent evf.

Nah - plug in EVF's are PITA and purely a way to gouge extra money out of you so they needed to keep a built in VF but make it a decent EVF IMO

Yep - I'd probably still have the LX5 or XY-1 otherwise and I had the clip on EVF for the Panny ;)

This looks promising. If they fix the AF then they may be onto a winner.

The MFD has been reduced to 5cm's which addresses one of the biggest issues with the original, its got a nice wide'ish aperture range and the lens covers just about the perfect length as far as I'm concerned.

The fact that is has no viewfinder is also not an issue because the original one was so utterly useless it makes perfect sense to remove it.

It should make a great little video camera as well if the AF is sorted.

But they could have improved it and even made it a dual OVF/EVF a la Fuji's X-series.

Also, they've continued their habit of alternating the articulated screen on G-series cameras. Looks like this one just hinges in one direction (great for a selfie ;) )

They could of course have stuck in an EVF but I'd bet a good sum it's come down to cost. The sensor with the 24-120mm f2-3.9 lens will not be cheap to manufacture, I'd guess that by sticking an EVF on there the price would have been beyond where Canon wanted to pitch it at.

Besides there a tiltable EVF accessory available if it matters that much to anyone. Check the link below.

I'v not used either, but it does look like more functionality has been lost on the mark II other than the viewfinder, in that it's lost the jog wheel at the front (which I assume was for quick change of aperture/shutter?) and also the exposure comp wheel. Does this mean that you'll have to use the menus to access these as that'd be a real PITA?

I think the ring around the lens acts as a 2nd dial but I do agree that it does look like some ergonomics have been sacrificed. I never really had a problem with the handling of the 1st one and the screen was superb, it was just crap as soon as you started to press the shutter button.

I must admit I don't think I could cope without a front and rear jog wheel these days, so losing the only one it had is a definite no go for me. I'd actually like a 3rd jog wheel for mine so I could have Aperture/shutter, EXP comp and ISO all on tap without having to press any other buttons ;)

Don't like the screen, the G1x articulation was the reason I bought one as I'd gotten so used to it on the G12.

    For the princely sum of $299 - what's that, £199? :(

WEX have it on pre-order at £749GBP!!!!

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera (9167B012AA) - Wex Photographic

The EVF I saw at Calumet for $299USD, so (HORRORS) that may be £299GBP!!!!! :suicide:

I agree the "street" price will inevitably be lower. I still think it's a terrifying price-point.

Bloody hell!! Looks like typical Canon UK currency conversion in action again. What a shame.

Just wondering.... why do they call this a 1.5" sensor when 18.7x14mm is less than 1" diagonally?
How do they work out sensor size?

That is a very good question, would love to know the answer as on the face of it it looks like very misleading advertising.

Edit, even APS-C sensors don't have a 1.5" diagonal. It is all very confusing as the Sony RX100 and RX10 have a 1" sensor and they're not 1" either, so I can only assume that the measurement is the area perhaps or something perhaps rather than the diagonal? However, this doesn't seem right either as that makes the G1X 2.61cm squared, which is only just over an inch
