For the money it really is superb. It's well built (better than expected) and taking a few shots in the garden, the image quality is great too.. The 18-55mm lens seems reasonable as well.

Canon has a winner I reckon. Which would you buy - a Nikon 5700 et al with all their shortcomings, or a 6MP SLR?

    No contest really.

I seem to recall that you had a D30 before.

Would you say that (other than the increase in resolution), this is better?

The D30 was probably better built. It depends what you are using it for I suppose.

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for it, and from where?

It'd be great if you could post a mini review once you've had time to experiment with it a bit.

I bought it, together with the 18-55 lens at Park Cameras for £844. It's actually cheaper at UK Digital but I prefer Park for their excellent service etc.

have you tried it with other canon ef lenses ?
Just wondering what the short back film plane has on the focal length and aperature of the lenses.
I imagine it would make my 28-70 3.5-4.5f a bit longer , but would also make the aperature effectivly smaller, using only part of the image. Just wondering how bad it might be.

No I haven't. To be honest, after having it a few days, I'm beginning to realise why it's cheap. The plastic finish is not really good to hold as it's quite "slippy". I reckon it'll sell well but it's certainly no 10D.

To be honest I returned the 300D under the 7 day distance selling law. I just didn't like the finish of the body. It seems cheap and nasty compared to the 10D.

I bought a 300D from Jessops on the day of release and I think it's great. I priced matched it with QED. In my opinion I don't think the body is cheap and nasty but I agree it's no 10D. But for £500 less the 300D is a very good camera. It's my first digital SLR, I was using a EOS 30 before that. I think the EOS 30 body is better (martial wise) but I still prefer the 300D. Hope this may help anyone considering buying one.

    Anyone looking for a EOS 30? ;)

Keep your EOS 30 - the money you'd get for it is pitiful but it is a great camera & film isn't dead yet - there's still something about black and white film that Digital can't fully reproduce - especially grainy film like tmax 3200

    Hi Wiber,
I agree on the black and white quote. I have been thinking do I sell my EOS 30 or keep it. If I sell I could use the money towards a battery grip and EF 55-200 lens for my 300D (when Canon finally release them). But as you say there are good reasons for keeping it as well. I'll just have to see what sort of offers I get.
I take it by your logo your a Floyd fan like me?. :smashin:

FYI the 55-200 & battery grip are out now. I was offered a deal on them by Park Cameras at the time they despatched my 300D.

    Hi Witters,
Thanks for the info. I've phoned loads of dealers and none have had any in stock. I phoned Canon UK and they couldn't tell me when they were having stock, so maybe there is some imports or black markets doing the rounds. I'll give park Cameras a ring on Monday. Thanks again for the info.

Hmmm - that's a bit disturbing as I thought Park were/are an official UK dealer. Having said that the guy who told me said they only had a small quantity.

    Good luck!

If it helps, Jessops in Milton Keynes had a battery grip when bought my 300D last week - tried it out on my camera and rather liked it - made the camera feel a bit more substantial like my EOS 5

    Cheers,

    Ed.

    Hi EdR/Witters,
Thank you both for the info. I phoned Park cameras and they confirm having stock of both the battery grip & the 55-200 lens.Though Canon UK still tell me they haven't had stock yet. As for Jessops Milton Keynes they have the battery grip but it's been reserved for someone. My local Jessops haven't had either in, and there head office can't find the battery grip on there system. Moan over ;)

    All,

have been reading with interest some of your comments concerning the recently released digital slr for the masses ! - I'm going to be travelling around New Zealand in December and I was going to hold out buying a digital slr till I got to Singapore, do you suggest I do this or bite the bullet and buy one over here ? - I do have concerns about warranty, quality etc.

I need a camera that will produce better than average pics, and I feel that an slr such as the EOS 300 would give me all the functionality (and more) that I need for my trip. However, if there are any alternatives out there Id really appreciate your feedback

    cheers
    David

Hi David, firstly can I go in your suitcase?. :D As you've properly read I have a 300D and for the money it's a great camera. If you want to PM me you email address I can send you some photo's I've taken with it. Take a look on www.Pricerunner.com for the cheapest price, then ask Jessops to price match it. That's what I did, I paid £786.67 for the 300D and EF-S 18-55 lens. Make sure you buy a spare battery or the battery grip, and a large CF card or two.
It definitely takes better than average photo's in fact I think there stunning, but that's my opinion. Have a good trip.

Hi Ash and Toadoftoadhall, thanks for your feedback - being the impulsive type, I took a visit to my local jessops (Milton Keynes by the Hockey Stadium ... no wimbledon FC!) and took a print out of the QED offer of £786 - which they price matched ! - with the money I saved (circa £120) I bought a 512mb CF card ....... am absolutely chuffed ! I now have 7 weeks to work out all the features in time for my trip. Just wanted to say a big thanks to the forum as the advice has saved me a fortune. !!!

Hi David, glad I could help. I would like to think that's what this forum is all about (helping each other). I would think about buying another battery for your trip, and as for working it all out I found it easier to use than my EOS 30. I'm sure you will get to grips with it in no time. Have a good trip and maybe you could post some pictures on your return.

Got my 300D day before yesterday.

Jessops price was £899, but they price matched for me down to £784. I am thrilled with the results - image quality is reminiscent of good quality tranparency film such as Kodachrome in terms of detail, saturation and contrast. Call me an instant digital convert!

The main (only?) reservation most reviewers have with the camera is that they find the body plasticky and cheap compared to the EOS10D for example. As a result I was expecting something flimsy, but was pleasantly surprised to find that this was a solid, weighty and robust camera.

Would highly recommend this to anyone thinking of buying one, and I am looking forward to a weekend of snapping away and getting to know my new toy.

Will let you know how I get on...

Hi pauley, I've only just received an email saying there was a reply to the post on this thread, so I wasn't ignoring your post. I got mine from the Cardiff branch. I pleased to see your local Jessops price matched for you to. What digital camera have a review on it this month, and it had a best buy award.

Canon 300D sounds great! Must start telling the wife about it!

I have a Canon EOS 100 which I would like to upgrade. But do Sigma's (& other manufacturer's) range of EOS fit lenses work with the new EOS 300D body?
