I have just got a speedlight 380EX for my 450d and reading the 380EX manual it says that the features of the 380EX are depending on if its used with either Type A or Type B cameras - Does anyone know what the 450D is ?

Does anyone have any tips on using this flash with this camera ?

I managed to find a PDF manual for the 380EX here:

    http://www.cameramanuals.org/flashes_meters/canon_speedlite_380ex.pdf

EDIT: ok sorry guys - just discovered this in the 450d manual (no comments about RTFM :) ):
Would still be interested in knowing anyone elses experences of this type of flash / camera.

This is an very old Flashgun which was the affordable one in its day. It pre dates any of the digital SLRs all of which are all E-TTL II which would be Type A equivalent
As such it will work but those who used it with the 300D found it wasn't coping with it for recycle speed . The 300D isnt quite as fast as the 450D
A flashgun like the 430 Ex ( I) (or II) should be even better able to work with the 450D fully

It ( the 380) doesnt have much by way of controls, auto should be fine
The 430 and 580 even more do have usable manual overrides for creativity

Im not dismissing it though as I guess it is better than the built in flash as you can bounce and it will synch with the 450Ds electronics but it doesn't sound like an ideal partner for a modern camera like the 450D
