    Hi,

Im looking to buy my first SLR and have narrowed it down to 2 (canon 400d or the nikon D80) will probably settle for the canon as its cheaper and revials the nikon for image quality. I know nothing about SLR's yet but willing to learn slowly!
Ive waited a while hoping that the prices would come down in the sales but it hasnt.
Done some searching and the prices with kit lens all are roughly the same:mad: Looking for cheap as poss.
Dixons are doing package deals, does this seem like a good deal or not? it comes with kit lens and 55-200mm Tamron lens. http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/sto...655212&tabIndex=1&page=Product&fm=2&sm=0&tm=1

Totally sh****g is when it comes to lens, saw one the other day going for 5 grand!! does it make breakfast in bed too??
Would apreiate if someone could post some links to good sites that explain lens for idiots lol

    http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk is your friend.

Currently, the best price for the 400D with kit lens is £479.

The Tamron 55-200 can be had for £72 so the Dixons deal isn't great.

SeeHear - I trust you have handled these two cameras? - They feel very different and you should make sure you like the feel of the one you prefer for other reasons - My brother was convinced he would buy the 400D until he had a fondle & now has decided on the D80 due to handling ergonomics etc - Paul :smashin:

i am in a similar position to SeeHear in that i am considering the same cameras, however i already own an eos 500n 35 mm camera with a 28-80 and 80-200 mm EF lenses and was wondering if the lens were 100 % compatible with the 400D as this would save a lot of cash over getting the nikon which is more expensive anyway never mind the extra cost of new lens.... i am going to have a look in a few camera shops at the weekend to try out a few different models so any info would be a great help

According to the first review of the 400D I read at www.dpreview.com the camera supports the following lenses:
    • Canon EF / EF-S lens mount
    • 1.6x field of view crop
BTW I wasn't trying to plug either camera as I have not seen (or held) either of them! My brother didn't know that I was a Nikon man until he told me he preferred the D80
In your scenario it does make sense to stick with the D400 provided your existing lenses are up to the job (?)
    Paul ;)

    hi paul

thanks for the info. my lenses are in reasonable condition but like your brother i will need a good fondle of a few cameras and if the nikon fits best then i will bite the bullet.even if i go with the D400 i may just invest in a few new lenses anyway

I was going to buy a 400D, it was on the counter, price matched at £448 inc lens, but after playing with it for half an hour found that it was just too small, went for a Nikon D50 (£348) and am very happy with it.

I have the 400d. If you think it is too small then try it with the battery grip, it's so much better.

    .

    Then don't do it!

There is (usually) nothing wrong with these tranactions, but with a little web browsing you can usually find something at a reasonable price via an established company.

You will find that there are some prices on "that well known auction site" which are more than those currently being offered from recognised outlets.

try the link above for starters.
Amazon and Cameras2u offer free postage and are priced at £493.

One more bit of advice - don't rush. :D

Small hands eh lucky you - Back to the subject - I've bought a bit of gear from HK but not a camera & tbh I'd rather have a full UK Warranty rather than an International Warranty which you'd get from HK ....
As far as getting your 400D for under £500 the Ebay link for the body "smelled" a bit to me when you see what other stuff has been sold to get the feedback which although was 100% was only on 14 transactions - I'd get the bargepole out on that one!
I got a mate at work a 350D for Xmas from a contact on another Forum - He sold his last 400D including kit lens for £430 (these are BNIB not used & come with full warranty) - I could ask him for you if that was the sort of deal you were after (?) - I also know another guy who is based in USA & he specialises in Canon lenses - He might be able to get a 400D but no idea of the price until I ask ... Paul ;)

If you're flying soon, even within the UK, it is worth checking Dixons tax free prices in the airport.

I bought a 400D / 18-55 lens kit from them for about £450 in November.

The website www.dixonstaxfree.co.uk only lists some of their stock (and doesn't currently show the 400D), but it does give the phone numbers for the airport shops. Might be worth a call!

I am in much the same boat as SeeHear:thumbsup: and have been looking at a few cameras, my short list comprises of Nikon D80, Canon 400D or a 30D.
Would like to know some views before I make the plunge, From what I gather the 30D has a faster shooting speed than the 400D, although the 400D has greater pixels.
Don't know too much about the D80 although I take it to be much the same as the 400D????

Or as a outside runner the Sony A100 ? don't know what this has got going for it apart from the Memory card format.

    Please Help !!!!
    :lease:
