I have just been given a Canon 350 D for my birthday and I'm wondering what any users think of the kit lense that comes with it. It is the Jessops special edition silver camera. I have read some less than enthusiastic reviews but I would like some feedback from users. Thanks :)

black goods look more expensive than silver, but if it saved you a packet and its not gonna be sold at all then its fine

kit lens aint great, but its a starting point, you'll end up buying further lenses as you go anyway

I still have mine. Can't say I use it much. Kept it for the 18mm end as I have not got round to a wide angle lens yet.

The kit lens is light and plastic - but it takes a perfectly acceptable photo. The aperture is on the small side so it is not at its best in low light.

I have bought another lens with a larger aperture but I certainly would not knock the quality you can get out of the kit lens. It is a good lens to get you started.

Looking at the exif in Johns' pictures they were at f10 - the kit lens is at its best at f8 and above I seem to recall.

Going OT for a moment... before I started this looking up camera stuff on the internet lark I had never heard of a lense - it was a lens.

Seen it called a lense so many times I had to look it up. Seems there is no dictionary word lense but it is shown as an acceptable alternative spelling to 'lens' . So I'll keep calling it a lens :)

Caveat: based on Internet research not a real book :rotfl:

The Jessops silver edition was more expensive than the black. And for some reason the lens was touted as being better.

But standard black was fine for me.

If you got the camera for you birthday then ask for a monster telephoto for xmas!!

The kit lens isn't that bad. Look on the positive side; it is light and compact, has a zoom range that suits the camera very well for general photography and does reasonable macro. To improve on it significantly you will be looking at something like the Canon 17-40mm which is just as slow as the kit lens but doesn't go as tight or the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 which doesn't go as wide. The big disadvantage of these lenses is that they are big, heavy and very expensive.

The less expensive, but still in the over £200 range lenses may well have no better optical quality than the kit lens.

isnt the 'special edition' kit lens a USM version of the 18-55?

good camera craft will get you good results with the kit lens, you WILL buy a telephoto and a walkabout lens though!
