I installed DPP 3.4.1. today, and sure enough as pointed to in other forums, it lists the 1000D in the list of compatible cameras.

The numbering patterns Canon uses has led others to sumize that this will be a budget entry level camera.

    Conclusive proof.

IMo canon needs something below the 450d and I guess the 400d isnt it (due to cost of manufacture).

Not sure what features they could cut though that would save big costs and not get them destroyed in the press/market.

It would be interesting especially as competitor SLRs are starting to come in at High End compact digital prices.

Canon/Nikon are not a must have brand for many people trading up from that market - where as names like Sony carry a lot of blind loyalty.

It would be a win-win for Canon as they can likely tie people into their SLR systems for lens & accessories - which we typically spend more on than our SLR bodies....

Perhaps they will take a leaf out of Sony's book and simply release a non live view version of the 450D - as Sony did with the A200/A300.

which in itself is interesting as Sony's new Live View implementation seems to be a direct pull for the typical 'never used a viewfinder' using compact upgrader....

And does it cost much to impliment?

Canon have been caught castraighting cameras via software before. And to be honest it doesnt cost them anything to keep featuers in that are primarily software.

We need to be looking at where they can save money on hardware. Things like the viewfinder (esp with liveview), fps, buffers, buttons, LCD's, build etc.

I have heard rumours about this version. Aparently it will replace the Rebel XTI series os it will be called Rebel XS. Over here it will be the 1000d.

So my guess is that it will still retain 10mp. As for the other things i am not so sure. I have a 400d. If this is the case then it was not that long ago since they had annouced the 450D to be suddenly replaced with a 1000D. If it is indeed a new base/entry DSLR then i say they might drop the Mp to 8Mp and drop other things like high ISO. Limit the shutter speeds too.

My guess is its new entry unit then:
    8Mp
    50-800ISO
    10 sec - 1000/sec
    fewer menu options
prob keep live view as this is one of the selling points of a compact.

    This is just my speculations!!

If the 1000D is rumored to 10MP then it can't be a 450D replacement as thats already at 12.2MP.

Sounds interesting anyway. Might wait to replace by 350D after all.

    Thanks for that
I wonder if it is only me finding the whole range is getting a bit confusing..almost as if Canon needs to maintain a 3 horse race below the FF market
The 1000D does not seem to be competition for the 450 , which itself is already attracting some of the 40D market
I have no doubt all 3 ( The 400D will coexist for a while too) will be capable but is so much variety simply not bewildering?
    I guess time will tell:rolleyes:
