Quick question, can you pick anything up without a dish up, even a few channels perhaps just with the Sky box plugged into the mains..just how much can you do without a dish?

nothing mate, with no dish there is nothing to pick up a signal. You could play with the receivers menus for a bit, but that would get boring

Hmm...what if the dish was stationary in the house and connected to the receiver, not acutely wall mounted and properly installed, can i pick up any kind of signal?

check this page out for example.

With a standard dish I'm sure you would need at least a clear line to the sky and of course it would have to be pointing at a satellite, maybe an open window if you weere lucky enough to have one in the right place :)
