I've some tapes which need recording on to DVD in NTSC format for a guy in the states. Can this be done on a (UK) E50 ?

If you have a multi-format VHS (I assume they are VHS tapes?) then yes as the E50 can record a 'proper' NTSC signal. However if you have a VCR that has 'NTSC Playback' then it will output in PAL60 which the E50 cannot record.

Tapes are PAL, so the E50 can't convert then ?

From experience, it has to be NTSC to NTSC or PAL to PAL.
