Is it possible to patch games without Xbox Live Gold? I understand that silver membership is free, whereas gold you have to pay for.

I would like to patch RS Vegas but don't want to pay £40 to do so!

    Thanks,

With your silver account you get full access to all updates, XBLA games and XBL Marketplace content (however you might have to wait a few days to a week for certain 5 star releases like Halo 3 videos)

Ok thanks. I think I got a 30 day trial of Gold with the console (or a game). I don't want to activate this yet.

From your comments above I assume I can just plus ye old ethernet cable into my router, login as a silver member (without activating the Gold account trial yet) and patch the game?

Also, I sometimes hear about bad things happening when people download patches and updates :) Any advice here?

    Cheers,

If your router is set up to dish out an IP address to connected devices (DHCP) then yes it should be as simple as plugging in the cable.

The problems with patches are very rare and usually only happen to a limited number of boxes - there are no issues at the minute as the last problem was fixed a couple of days after it appeared.

When you create your Silver account you get 30 days of free Gold membership from that point on I believe. There is no activation of the Gold membership, that I'm aware of anyway.

But, as a general question to the floor, if you can keep creating Silver accounts over and over for rolling gold membership, doesn't that knacker the 'this demo isn't available to Silver members for another week' type limitations - you just create a new Silver account to access the demo. Or are the Gold membership restricted downloads protected from that?

you can only create a maximum of 4 silver accounts that get the free 1 month's gold membership, so you can't do it over and over

Well, I don't want to activate my gold membership yet :(

So you're saying that when I activate the silver membership the 30 day gold membership trial will automatically begin? I did get a card with instructions to logon to the website and do something, so I assumed the gold membership trial wasn't automatic?

I don't know about any card, but that's how it was for me. And MS didn't exactly go out of their way to promote this offer, either. See my post from another thread:
