I'm on the lookout for a compact digital camera to get as a christmas
gift for my wife. It will replace her 15 year old Ricoh F50 which still
    gives excellent results.
I've got a budget of £250 but am willing to pay up to £300 for a Sony camera as I have two 128mb memory sticks for use with my Sony Trv33
camcorder therefore I shouldn't have to pay any extra for memory.
(I am not limiting my choice to Sony but if a £300 Sony camera is better
than a £250 other brand without added memory then it would make sense
    to go for a Sony.)
I would like the camera to be 5 mega pixels or higher and also have a minimum
of 3x optical zoom (I bet you're all thinking "well, that narrows it down a bit  " :D ). It must also give good results from indoor shots
and be fairly easy to use as the wife is only interested in a point and shoot.
I've done a check on pricerunner and couldn't beleive how many
cameras there are in the £250 - £300 range!
Your help would be greatly appreciated :)

Well the sony sw1 is said to be a cracker and looking a that the reviews and specs it looks like a good choice. Then there's the ixus 500 and the canon S60, my fav of the three

    Thanks for the reply Keano.
I've been reading up on the cameras you've mentioned as well as some
others, and they all look really appealing. There are some excellent deals
on all those cameras too especially regarding the extra memory packages.
Feature wise, they look similar - i.e. excellent image quality and good manual
options but at the moment I'm leaning towards the Sony SW1 (or the SW12
if she prefers it in black). The reason for this is the fact that i've already
got 256mb of memory and if I were to go for a package that includes
another 256mb stick, that would be more than enough (Pixmania have the
    package at £281).
I'm not ready to buy one yet as I want to find out a bit more about these
and others that some of the forum members might recommend.

I know someone who has the sony and they love it. It's had great reviews if it had been out when i first bought a compact i would have looked at it myself.

I'd say leave the 500 and choose the sony or the S60. You can add lenes to the S60 thata great feature on a compact and it is 28mm that a nice wide angle for indoor shots, i think you can add lenses on the sony to but not 100% sure

    Side by side stats http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/com...ebyside&cameras=canon_s60,sony_dscw1&show=all

If you look at the stats then the S60 is the best featured cam, but still the sony is a very nice cam
