I have an AltecLansing 5021 2.1 speakers package to connect the iPod in the bedroom. Never heard sound that good from PC speakers  (120 quid for the lot) but the sub doesn't fit under the bed standind up. Is it an issue if I put it on its side?

As long as you don't block any air vents it won't harm it so give it a try. It probably won't sound as good though.
