Can the RS232 port be used other than service

I'm looking to control a Samsung 40" LCD screeen and would like to do it via RS232 rather than IR. The specifications state that the unit has an RS232 port for service only. Does anyone know if I would be able to use this for basic control (On/Off and input select). I have heard of cases where manufacturers state that the RS232 is for service only but in fact it will allow control but hasn't been fully tested before release.

Whats the model your trying to control. I have controlled a few. Getting the codes is a bit of a pain. I think the ones you can control come with a 9 pin to 3.5 jack RS232 cable. The 3.5 port is usually labeled control in.
