I popped a few NTSC DVD's in which surprsingly played! My PS3 certainly didn't used to be able to do this? Has NTSC emulation or something been included on an update?

PS It's a UK model by the way.

Just because you don't dosn't mean you have to take the mick.:D It's made me think though I've not tried a region free NTSC DVD on my PS3.

    Cheers

I can't make sense of it. I'm playing a "naughty" title that I imported from the US and it's playing fine. And so do about 10 other NTSC region free DVD's I have. When I put these discs into my Pioneer DVD player they come up on the display as being NTSC but they are also playing on my UK PS3.

I haven't been drinking. Honest.

Are you sure they are not region free NTSC discs or ripped DVDs with the region code removed. Playing Region 1 discs will not work on a PS3

Yep, region 1's don't work but Region Free NTSC discs are.

One thing I've noticed is that the menu calls some of them "DVD-Rom's" not "DVD-R's" even though these are standard DVD's that work fine in any other DVD player.

PS just checked with my other player again. My UK PS3 definitely is playing NTSC region free discs.

Well, I can confirm that I have just unwrapped a brand new disc I purchased last week in Orlando - and it plays just fine. I assume it is region free [nothing on the case], but is certainly NTSC

Not only are they playing fine, but like PAL Region 2 discs, it's upscaling them too, so they look great.

Every "erotic" disc that I have purchased from the US is playing fine.

    Don't tell the missus!

PS mine is an original 60GB UK model just in case that makes a difference. Don't see why it would though.

If you're going to go off topic it's a good way to go.:) Back on topic I'll see if I can dig out a few region free and region 2 NTSC DVDs out and try them
out. I'll let you know later when I've had a chance to play them.

    All the best

Probably not necessary but wish I'd titled this as "Can the PS3 now play region 2 & region free NTSC DVD's?" as it appears to be able to do both now.

PS forget the DVD-Rom theory. It calls all purchased DVD's "DVD Rom's".

Well the ps3 should of played region 2 ntsc or region free ntsc discs right from the start , havent tried any so didnt know that it didnt play them.If it was missing then it was Sonys error and they have now corrected it.All region 2 dvd players should play ntsc as japan is also region 2 , thats my understanding anyway.

Yes. Europe and Japan are region 2.

The PS3's technically are not equipped to play both PAL and NTSC. When I had a Japanese PS3, even though it was region 2, it couldn't play my PAL region 2 DVD's because it was an NTSC model. It would actually come up with a message saying "cannot play PAL format". The UK PS3's should be the same as far as they cannot play NTSC discs. Something to do with the hardware I believe.

This is why it's a surprise that they suddenly do seem able to do both.

I suspect that Jp PS3 were r2, rA NTSC only, US PS3 r1, rA, NTSC only and euro PS3 are r2, rB, NTSC and PAL. All will be region happy with r0 discs.

I'm wondering whether the Euro PS3 has been PAL and NTSC capable all along.

I'm assuming when you say that "all will be happy to play r0 discs" you don't mean that a Japanese PS3 should play a r0 PAL disc?

I suspect the euro PS3 has had PAL and NTSC either since the beginning [most likely] or close to it.

re r0 PAL in a Jpn player no it won't play but no becuase of the region bit (thats okay) but because of the PAL bit, hence my 'wording' above.

The UK PS3 has always been able to playback NTSC material, its only the NTSC consoles such as the US and Japanese PS3's that cannot playback PAL material.

Its the same with standard DVD players, those in the UK have no trouble playing NTSC DVD's but the majority of NTSC DVD players will only understand NTSC, you try and use a PAL disc and you wont like the result.

As far as I know, JPN and US PS3s have always been restricted to NTSC only, but the Euro PS3 has always been able to play NTSC and Pal content.

All machines are region locked, but can play R0 content - NTSC only on JPN/US machines.

I've always thought that the PAL/NTSC capabilities are hardware based so, as you say, it would make sense for it to have this functionality from the beginning.

Its worth pointing out that while a US PS3 wont play region free PAL DVD's, if you rip the same DVD to a .mpg file, this will play.
