    Open up control panel,

printers and faxes (printers and other hardware in xp),

    add printer

in the pop up box, press next, then select "a network printer, or a printer attatched to another computer"

    browse for a printer

in the drop down list that will appear (allow it to laod first) you should see the pc and the printer you wish to connect too.

    hope that helps.

sorry, think i may have got slightly ahead of myself

is your printer connecetd to your pc working?

can your pc and laptop talk to each other e.g. share files?

you will need to run the above add printer process on your laptop.

you may need to set up a local network between the two machines, very easy to do, happy to talk you through it.

sorry, only just got back to a computer

it sounds to me like what you need to do is setup a network. go into control panel again,

    control panel

    network setup wizard.

in here create an identity for your computer e.g. paul's pc (if setting it up on the pc) and a network, or "workgroup" name e.g. paul's network.

select "enable file and printer sharing".

now, go to your laptop, follow the same instructions as above changing your computer name to e.g. paul's laptop.

now, go through the first set of instructions i gave you, and you should be onto a winner.

On the PC with the printer attached open "Printers and Faxes" from the start menu. right click on your printer and choose "Sharing" from the menu.

Select the "Share this printer option" putting whatever name you want in the box below. Click OK.

now on the laptop open "Printers and Faxes" from the start menu. choose add printer from printer tasks on the left panel, click next then choose the second option "A network printer or printer attached to another computer"

Now browse to your Desktop PC and you should be able to select the printer

When adding the network printer on your laptop did you try Double clicking on the name of your desktop PC?

If you know the computer name of the desktop (right click on my computer and click properties if you don't), on the laptop press:

    Start (enter)
    Run (enter)
    \\computername
    Then press enter

If the printer appears in the printers and faxes folder in here, right click on it and click connect.
