I haver a JVC Everio MG57 which has AV,USB and AV out sockets.

Is it at all possible to connect this to my Sony HXD 870 so that I can record from the camcorder directly to the hard drive of the sony to allow me to view recorded footage from the Sony's hardrive?

Sure - use the AV out; either composite video, or S-video (S-video will be better quality).

The HXD 870 has both composite video and S-video inputs on the front (as well as audio inputs).

Follow the instructions on your 870 to record from that input.

The HXD870 instructions only seem to refer to the DV in (i link) I think this is firewire input?

I was hoping that there was a way of going from USB out to DV in but thats probably a little optimistic?

Yes, the DV input is Firewire. That won't work from your camcorder as it doesn't have DV output. The only way is to use the analogue connections. You can't connect via USB.

    Not optimistic.. near impossible.
They are different standards. There is a discussion on another thread about the JVC Everio 575 which records to HDD but has firewire out
    You may have missed it

Thanks, senu I have just had a look at that thread.

Whats the technical reason why the usb on the camcorder couldnt connect to the usb on the hdd recorder?

Simple version of the answer: Technically it could, but it doesn't.

USB is a digital connection which can be used for all sorts of applications. On a PC you'll have different software depending on the application; e.g. for a web cam, printer, etc.

Your DVD recorder isn't a general purpose PC, it will have specific software to support specific functions. From the 870 manual it has one USB port for printing, and another for copying still photos and audio jukebox. It doesn't support (at least not as documented) recording video over the USB connection.
