Can I watch programs on old Sky HD box?

I have an original Thomson Sky HD box. It's got error 28, no signal on most channels now.

I'm inclined to disconnect it, buy a terabyte box and plug that in instead.

However, my wife has loads of stuff recorded on the old box that she hasn't watched. Will she still be able to watch it even if it's not connected to the dish any more? Does the box need to be able to recevie a signal saying it's still got a paid up subscription or anything like that?

Welcome to AVF.
It needs to be connected to the dish and to have the card in that was used for the recordings.
If it's a dish problem a new one wouldn't work either, if it's a receiver problem it needs a new PSU.
