I have a a pair of Mission M74 fronts and an M7c1 centre. I want a decent pair of surrounds but because the M7ds surrounds are now discontinued I thought of just buying a pair of stand/bookshelf M31 fronts to use for my rears. They look similar to the M74's too.

Do small fronts work just as well or are surrounds specifically designed for that purpose?

    Thanks.

They should work fine, the only drawback is they take up more room.

Welshy - the M7ds are still available in some places - I bought 2 pairs from a hifi store in london just before Xmas (new & Boxed) for £180.

You can use monopole speakers like the M71i as the rear speakers for a set up and there have been many debates which sound better between mono and bi/di pole speakers.

If you want the bipole speakers and dont want to hunt down the M7ds then the M3ds are almost identical and was Missions recommendation as an alternative if I couldnt locate the M7ds rather than the M5ds or 78ds etc

Thanks for your help. I will visit a local hifi store today and try out their m3ds's against their m31's.

Should be fine - I bought a pair of m30's to use as rears and kept my m70's to use as fronts. Portsmouth Sony Centre offered me some m7d's unboxed for £90, but unfortunately, due to space constraints, I couldn't accomodate them.
