I have upped the memory to 4gb but I would like more performance. Can I upgrade the processor, or should I be looking at a new system altogether?

Although you maybe could, it wouldn't do you much good as the motherboard couldn't handle a better processor and it'd need to be sufficiently better cooled, so yes a new system would be the way forward :)

New system, the atom processors are all soldered to the motherboard and even if they were socketed they're all very slow.
