Question Can I receive more channels on Freeview Play?

Hi all,

Briefly, I would like to know if it’s possible to watch catch-up on Freeview Play channels that I can’t receive over the air?

We have just moved house and now live in quite a steep sided valley. At first I feared that there would be no DTV signal but I was hugely relieved to discover that there is a small repeater less than a mile away and in line-of-sight.

I plugged in the telly and set it tuning. I was initially perplexed that could only pick up so few channels so I got the ladders out and went to fiddle with the aerial. With the aerial now pinpointed on the transmitter I re-tuned but still came up short!

After a bit of searching I soon found that the local transmitter doesn’t carry all the channels I had been used to receiving (it’s a non-commercial?!). I get BBC, ITV, C4, C5 etc (and mercifully I can pick up Sewing Quarter!!) but I am missing Dave and Quest etc. I see now why the previous owner had installed a satellite dish.

We are considering a new 43” TV with Freeview Play and was wondering whether it’s possible to watch Dave or Quest etc on catch-up even though I cannot receive those channels through the aerial.

Of course my alternative is to get a Freesat TV but with C4 dropping HD I am thinking that perhaps Freesat is in decline?? Also, my choices of TV are limited if looking at a Freesat set (I really don’t want to have a separate Freesat box if I can help it).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The answer is yes, UKTV Play would get you Dave, available as an app on most recent LG, Samsung, Sony and Panasonic TVs.

Alternative would be to buy a chromecast, and either use the apps on there or cast from your phone/tablet
