I copied a film from HDD to DVD and then discovered I'd neglected to edit out a commercial break.

Since I hadn't finalised the DVD I imagined it would be no problem to erase the first copy and then recopy the edited film.

It was then I discovered that the space from the deleted file hasn't been released back to me, and I can't find any way to reformat the DVD.

Is this normal or have I missed a trick here?

There are basically two main types of blank disc ,

You have DVD R , which are write once , not finalising means you can use the remaining space in another session , finalising means the disc cannot be written to any more regardless of whether you used all the space or not.

You cannot delete from any space on a DVD R once you write to it , its a permanent write , finalised or not.

DVD RW's on the other hand , can be formatted and written to many times.

DVD R's are the most common disc around , because they are so cheap compared to RW's that it doesnt actually make sense to buy the RW's.

Thankyou.

It's all so obvious when someone lays it out like that!
