We don't use them but I understand that 0808 is freephone like 0800.

Most Banks offer telephone banking where you can transfer over the phone as well as paying bills etc but you have to be registered. Its really down to your individual branch whether they would still do this over the phone anyway - although for security reasons they shouldn't without being able to verify you. That is if you can still get through to your branch direct :D

I would go to the branch today but ask about registering for their Telephone Banking service if they do one and then you're sorted for next time.

Certainly with my bank I can do transfers to people/ companies that I have done it previously for (or sometimes if I say it is to my mother or such) by phoning my branch/ customer service centre but to set up a new one then I have to contact my telephone banking.

For BT lines at least 0800, 0808 & 0500 are freephone numbers

I do all my banking online. Its nice not having to deal with the rude half-wits staffing your average high street branch.
