there's an old show (the martian chronicles) which i loved as a kid and i really want to see it again. trouble is it's only come out ntsc region 1. can i use my pc's dvd burner (with dvdshrink) to make a copy to watch on my tv and dvd player (region 2)? i realise this is slightly dodgey but i'm only making a copy for myself and it's that, or not purchase or watch it at all. :(

    thx

So long as your tv can play ntsc there should be no problem with your suggestion.

you could try something like this software,
    http://www.puremotion.com/dvconverter/
afaik there are also external converters to plug into your TV, but i would suggest changing the TV before you spend on such a device.

What is your dvd player? Might be able to make it Muti-region.If it can output Pal60 than
you watch NTSC on you Pal TV

Nero Vision Express can convert stuff from NTSC to PAL and vice versa

You'll need to run the video file through some sort of mpg encoder. Not exactly straight forward but it can be done. Canopus Procoder can convert NTSC to PAL. I also think it is easier to go from NTSC to PAL rather than vice versa. Or you could buy a cheapie DVD player that can be region hacked from the handset, some even come region free out of the box.

You can get a hacked multi region played from www.richersounds.co.uk for as little as £24.95, and most TV's made in the last 10 years at least will play NTSC, or at the very least PAL60 (should be able to select from the player set up menu). Your investment will soon pay for itself when you realise you can get discs from the US & other places much cheaper (and/or better) than here. As an example, I ordered the ROTK SEE from www.dvdsoon.com (Canadian) for £15.26 (delivered), and saw it on sale yesterday in HMV for £29.99. Although, if you buy your petrol at Morissons you can use the £5 voucher off their discounted price to get it for £14.99 I'm told.

BTW, DVDImport have The Martian Chronicles R1 for £6.40(ish) HERE

Removing region coding is easy but converting from one picture format to another isnt a simple task but it can be done.

Your best bet is to get a DVD player that can convert to PAL50hz which alot of cheaper players can do, that way you wont have to upgrade your TV and you will be able to watch NTSC discs without them being in black and white.
