Well Mono plus and say up to 1200? Preferably smaller.

To be matched with an MA Apex set.

Second hand maybe. Not sure about new unless you maybe went the diy route. What size is your room? Have you got room for another? Duel mono's would be cool.

Only an average sized living room. Certainly cant accomodate another and might prefer a bit smaller. Wont be building my own.

    Paradigm Seismic 110 or a USC 15.

Let me be generous with the bank's money and up the budget to say 1500?

What do you feel your BK Monolith Plus is missing? most guys seam to go DIY to better a mono with 15" in a sealed box. If don't want DIY maybe MA GXW-15 you will get one in your budget but they are pricy for what you get or possible look at USC 15

    or a 2nd hand M&K MX-350 MK II.

I did look upto a grand when I was look for my sub and BK seam to offer very good value.

New the USC15 IMVwill beat all subs under £2k apart from the USC18 @ £1900 so unless you want to spend £2k which would then open your search to include the JL E-112 or KK 12012.

Second hand is your only other option or DIY to get better, £1500 would build 2 x USC15 clones which would be pretty awesome.

The mono is not missing anything much. But its not the last word in subwoofer technology and there is better available. Especially smaller. I've upped the budget to 1500.

Usual suspects available... JL e-110, svs sb13, usc15, kk808, the paradigm ones mentioned etc

Impossible to get a sane recommendation if you don't say what you are looking for though. A "better" sub is pretty vague. Better at what exactly?

Well better at producing bass really

I'm not sure what you mean? It is for movie watching rather than music mainly. Something that will offer me better performance than my mono plus. At a nicer size too!

I means movies vs music, listening levels, type of films you tend to watch.

I suppose it boils down to whether you are looking for something that will rattle your teeth out or not :D

I think what is being asked is what is important to you:

    Bass depth
    Bass punch
    Flat response in room
    volume
    box size or looks
Single box solution i.e no separate amp
Does it need to have down facing drive like mono
Do you prefer the sound of sealed or ported box

Plus a bit more room info might also help

What size room is it going in
Where is it located in the room? close to corner?

Mostly movies, varied taste and moderate listening level. Never reference. Small a size as possible. Depth and punch as good as poss. Presumably everything of those suggested around the 1500 mark go low?

Not looking for a teeth rattler as such. Would play havoc with my dentures

Rough caricatures would have the 2 extremes as

KK - not the deepest, v clean, musical, punchy
SVS PB/PC - teeth rattler extraordinaire

Then the others somewhere between the 2 with paradigm at the kk end, jl at the svs end and USC in the middle.

Hopefully I have offended owners of all brands equally

2 things you can be sure of... They will all be crap if setup badly, demo at home is the best way forward if possible.

If you want punch though I would discount the svs PB/PC range as I had a pc+ and it never had punch.

depth & punch, USC15 £1400 smaller than Mono, JL E-110(£1649) smaller than USC15 and nicer looking package.

Thanks all for excellent tips. Plenty of food for thought. I do like the idea of the Paradigm Seismic 110 and I can get a deal on that. Plenty of time to decide yet.

When the time comes it'll be worth looking in the classifieds and seeing what turns up, of course you might need to act quickly, so research now is a good idea: You may even find some used bargains or even someone else's DIY subs as happened to Keith a little while ago (and very well finished too, so not something you wouldn't want in your living room).

Having gone the (twin) 15" sealed route after owning a Monolith for about 6 years then I feel you'd need something around the USC15 level to feel a worthwhile upgrade (though I've not heard the other suggested subs such as SVS, KK or Paradigm myself).

I've done the research and it will definitely be the Paradigm Seismic 100. The PBK software kit is another 100 on top but i'm told it is derived from ARC and good at what it does. I currently have an antimode and also use YPAO to do the sub calibration. How would the three work together? Presumably YPAO would still be run last, if at all?

Flog the antimode, run YPAO afterward if you feel you need to - I think in this case it will do more harm than good tho.

If using an Anthem AVR, is the PBK still needed for this sub? Also, how does the Seismic compare to something like the B&W PV1? I heard of one of these recently and was kinda surprised at its performance considering its small footprint. Would like to hear the Seismic at some point to compare.

I stand to be corrected but I think the answer is no since the PBK is just derived from the subwoofer EQ portion of ARC.

Did you for the Paradigm? Would be interested in your thoughts on the sub as I would like something similar myself (small footprint).

Just bought some more speakers. Waiting for next pay day then I'll get it. A bit of reading around and it seems to be more highly regarded than the PV1.

DSP, it reportedly has 2x the filter resolution of ARC on the x10 series for the subwoofer.
