    Building up my first home cinema with a mixture of components. System so far:
    Panasonic ae500 projector
    Toshiba sd220e soon to be replaced by a
    Harman Kardon DVD 2550
    Denon 3801 amp
    Mission centre speaker
    Front speakers Mordant Short ti25 - I think - 1980s Hifi speakers but they sound good:smashin:
    Surround speakers Wharfdale Diamonds.

    What I am lacking is a subwoofer but my budget is practically spent:( Would you recommend a cheap sub eg eltax thunder 8 from richer sounds, or is it better to wait for a few months and buy something more exotic and expensive? If so what? Can anyone point me in the direction of subwoofer reviews of the cheaper models?

    Cheers,

    Ian

    With that setup you might be spoiling the ship for a haporth' of tar by buying a cheap sub. You could get one to tide you over but you will soon be wishing you had spent more on something decent. Probably best to save a bit longer and if you do a search there is a wealth of info about subs.

    Don't waste your money on something that won't do justice to the rest of your system but wait until you can afford something like the MJ Acoustics Pro 50 at the very least.

    I see that you live in Bristol so why not pop down to the Hifi Show at Marriott Hotel from 20th to 22nd February where the organisers have made life very easy for you by putting REL, MJ Acoustics and Vibe in adjoining rooms so you won't even have to walk very far.

    Wither, I'm using a Tannoy Mx10 sub which sounds good with my setup and can be had for around £160 (rrp £270)

    Take a visit to www.petertyson.co.uk

    Thanks for the advice.

    Are there bargains to be had at the Bristol Show :smashin: or are things pretty much at RRP?

    I think that MJ Acoustics products are discounted for the show and some of the others may sell cheaper but I really meant that it was a good place to hear a variety of subs in action.

    Dear wither2000,

    If you're really in need a subwoofer and a cheap but will still do the job, I will recommend Yamaha YST-SW1500.

    It's of course can't be matched with those subs costing more yet it has a few plus points.

    1. It comes with remote. Handy to adjust the sound by yourself instead of asking someone else tuning for you when you're at your listening point;
    2. Excellent built;
    3. Excellent functions. Got most of what you ask for from a sub;
    4. It's servo driven;
    5. It can play low too...though not as loud as some more expensive subs;

    Check it out at www.yamaha.com.

    Regards,
    Will.
