    Hi all please can you help point me in the right direction. They seem to need spade like connectors like in the pics.

    You need 2 pin DIN male plugs. Maplin part number L64BA will get the job done.

    Could bare speaker wire be inserted?

    I guess you could but you'd need a pretty thin wire. It would probably also need to be "tinned" with solder to give it rigidity & reduce the risk of a whisker short.

    By the time you've done that you may as well fit the proper plugs. You can get screw fitting versions so no soldering required if that's your concern. Also available in right-angle.
