Introducing the SCAN SC-440SL DVD player. Standing at an overall height of just under 2", it's one of the world's slimmest players. And just because it's smaller, doesn't mean we've compromised on quality. Yes, the Toshiba shouldn't play any of these.
The Toshiba may cost a little more, needs latest firmware update but it's the one I would buy.

Toshiba doesn't claim it plays DVD-R or SVCDs, just VCDs.
If that's important maybe the Scan is a better buy for you.
Ultimate PQ doesn't seem to be your aim  .

Richer Sounds @ £119.00.
Latest Firmware v1.5. If you press " Zoom, 6, 0, 6, Zoom " the display will reveal firmware version.
Your Sony is a good machine, I wouldn't say the Toshiba is significantly superior.
