Say I take a blank DVD-R on my PC and burn some video files onto it.

AVI, MPG, whatever............

Can I load this DVD into the PS3's BluRay drive and browse the disc and play the files, or even copy them to the PS3's drive?

You certainly can young sir, just make sure you burn in UDF 2.5

Thanks for the info.

I'm wondering if people have a few DVD's sitting next to their PS3 with pics, music and video on them, and just load the disk, save wasting space copying it all to the HDD?

I personally stream everything and use a external HDD.
but I do copy movies across that get used more frequently like kids stuff, I normally just copy it from the computer doing away with the need for discs.
