Reason i ask is i lent mine to a friend over the weekend.Just turned it on today and the screen is blue with loads of foreign languages written on it,none in English. And it just stays on this screen. Is this some sort of virus or has he somehow got into a service menu i didn't know existed?

I dont think so , what was your friend doing with your PS3 ?
Playing games or trying out something weird with it ?

Back in the day , when it was possible to "install other OS" it was technically possible but was only ever done in a lab as some proof of concept , there was never a sample in the wild.

That feature was removed a couple of years ago though , and given that Sony wont allow online gaming activity on the PS3 network unless you upgrade , its not likely that you still have that feature.

Try holding down the power button for a few seconds when you switch on your PS3 to see if that brings up the XMB.

Might not help but worth a shot.

Just spoken to him on the phone and apparently he came home saturday night, and thought it a good idea to use the ps3 browser(something i never do as its pants) to look at,lets just say adults sites.I think booze had played a big part here

He's saying some sort of warning video came up then the screen switched to what i'm seeing now.

Tried resetting and nothing is working, what the hell has he done? not pleased at all

I saw a link to this pic on another forum posted by someone who got it after using the browser. Might be a variation of what you're seeing - try pressing X on the controller and see if that does anything?

Not sure if there is a risk of losing saves etc. though.

Ah thanks, that's it.Tried pressing all the buttons but the controller wont link to the ps3,tried resetting but nothings working.

Did they say on the other forum what that screen is?

Nothing useful unfortunately and the thread is about 3 years oldd.

The majority of the posts are daft banter and the others were from people who got the message and said that pressing X sorted it for them. However, nobody seemed to know what was causing it and if it was a permanent fix or not :(

Never heard of this before, but just been having a read up and it seems to have happened to alot of people while using the browser to watch videos.Think mine has a worse problem though as it wont even turn on now.Lucky it's only a month old so still under warranty. Will be taking it back tomorrow.

Thanks for the info and quick replies

Have you tried reconnecting your controller to the PS3 using a USB cable?

Another post here with issues when browsing or watching iplayer: The Blue Screen Of Corruption - PlayStation Forum

In post #2 the guy had corrupted data on his hard drive and booting the PS3 in safe mode and selecting repair options 3&4 helped get him up & running again. The link he provides is broken but I think these instructions explain how to do it pretty clearly:
How to access Playstation 3 SAFE MODE - PlayStation® Community Forums

NB. they suggest starting with option 2 and if that doesn't work move on to 3,4 &5. Option 5 is very much a last resort!!

It wont even switch on now.Pressing buttons on the controller or the console does nothing.Think my only option is to take it back to the shop and see what they say.

Quicker to phone Sony and get a refurb.
The retailer might not be interested, even though your contract is with them.
Up to 6 months, it can be seen as faulty as sold, over 6 months old, you're at their discretion as to how they sort it.
The may offer a repair, or replacement(refurb possibly), but with Sony, if it's under a year old, you will get one by the weekend possibly, if you call them quick.
It's a corruption, and can be caused with faulty drives, connection to headsets, connecting to amps, etc..sometimes you can get the database fixed, other times you can't.
Dropping it as well, could break it..drink and gaming, well..don't lend stuff like that to friends..

I think your friend has done more than he's let on, TBH.

Go to the shop and get a brand new console. The retailer "might not be interested" is irrelevant.

Do not get a refurb in return for your console that is only a month old.

That's what I'd do. I'd be very unhappy settling for a refurb as a replacement for a 1 month old console.

Probably best not to mention that your friend had had a few jars when it happened though

If you get the run around CAB will be able to assist re. your rights as a consumer and the retailer's legal obligations to you: Get advice
