I currently use an old and perfectly functioning SONY Mavica with the old floppy drive system - time now to upgrade to a smaller card based camera - The Mavica however places an optional time and date stamp on every picture embedded on the jpg picture. I need this functionality/facilty for each picture and cannot find a camera that will do this? My budget is about £300.00 does anyone know of one please?

Are you talking about adding the date latter as mine embeds the time and date at the time of taking the pic and it even remains even after altering it in Photoshop and re-saving.

Thanks for the response guys. I know a date and time stamp may be naff for some - but this camera is used for survey work and when you have 100's of photos to label/ident, collate its an extremely useful tool as I collate visually by viewing each picture. Yes the Sony puts/"burns" this information on to each jpg its permanent unless you edit it out or turn the option off as you can, as I need it displayed for each picture presented in a report - don't want the hassle of reading each file info. For those old enough to remember it’s like the old Canon/Nikon data back on my old SLR's. I don't need very high resolution or image quality but do need the "data back" function as per the Mavica - any ideas?

    :D

got a quick query here - I've got a bog standard 2 meg camera (finepix a201), what impreovement would I gain if I upgraded to a 5mp meg for example..?? am I right in saying that when displayed on a screen they look just about the same, but when printed off it will look better..?

just I recall reading sometime ago that with a 2 meg camera you should only print the image upto a4 size..

    cheers!

You cant get A4 out of a 2mb mate, i think you'd notice if you did. Mp is a small part really mate, you could get a 5mp camera that for like £90 it would be awful, and your camera would beat it on most specs. So the simple answer is its the camera and not really the pixels thats the most important thing.

But cameras like the ixus 500, the canon S60a the optio S4 would blow yours out of the water they have both the mp and the quality you're looking for

Sorry mate, but can ask you if you mean that the file has the time and date imbedded in the file. Or do you mean the time and date is actuallly on the picture when you print it?

If its the former, then every modern digital camera does that

I would say you want one with a good lens and 3mp for A4 printing, but that does not give too much cropping I have a 4mp and it blows up to at least A3 and is still very sharp. The more mp you use the more memory you use and the less pictures you can take in one go.

I had a Kodak with the same option. New kodaks seem to have dropped the idea.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Kodak called it a 'watermark' and from a quick search you can get shareware watermark software to batch process your pictures into ones with date stamps or whatever else you want printed into them. this one looks OK. Being shareware you can try it out before you register it. I saw 3 or 4 others as well.
Just search for 'watermark software digital camera' if you want more choices.
