My husband has a 5 year old Nikon 775 and wants to upgrade, so I want to get him a new camera for his birthday. He uses the camera for landscapes, buildings and plants etc, has been looking at cameras like the Panasonic TZ3, the Ricoh Caplio R6 and the Fuji S6500fd but can not make his mind up. Bearing in mind I know nothing about cameras can some kind person recommend a camera please.

I have the Fuji S6500FD and can highly recommend it. It's better than the other cameras in low light high ISO situations aswell.

Thanks ScottBT, are your photos taken with a S6500? as they look very good. Any more votes for the S6500? Or any more recommendations. He wants a 28mm - ?? lens (Long zoom).

I was thinking of upgrading to a S6500, can anyone else recommended it or another similar camera up to about £230?

As Liquid says, a "proper" digital SLR will be far superior to a compact.

However, I just bought a TZ3 for when I haven't got my DSLR with me. What sold it to me above any other compact was the 10x optical zoom (most compacts have 3x). Also image stabilisation and intelligent ISO mode helps, plus a monster screen on the back.

Tobers....

Apart from the fact I can not afford a DSLR, if I did get him one; then all I would get is "I need this lens for landscapes and this lens for close ups" we would have to sell the kids or one of his kidneys (now theres an idea we need a new bathroom). He WILL be happy with compact camera.

I couldn't afford a DLSR so I had to settle on a 'bridge' camera. The S6500FD has 28mm wide angle (sort of) and a good 300mm range. It's a great camera for the money.
