Camcorder recommendations please

    I'm looking to buy a camcorder this year sometime, but I don't tend to buy mags that review then, so I don't have a clue what;s good out there.
    It'll be mainly for videoing motorsports (drag racing if that's your thing) so it needs to have a good zoom for distance, be able to cope well with fast moving stuff, work well in all weather (ligthing) conditions and have a decent battery life.
    I have dvd-ram and all other formats in the home if it's a direct to disc recoder. Failing that I assume dv is a very good (is it the the best) quality format for recording.
    That's the basics of what I think I need/want. If you can recommend anything else worth having or camcorders to buy say £500ish feel free.
